In VLC, open Tools, Preferences, Input / Codecs and confirm Hardware-accelerated decoding reads Automatic, so the graphics chip carries the load instead of the processor. Laptops stay cooler and quieter on mains power with that setting active.
Control data use on a metered line
Tethered to a phone, or living with a monthly cap, take the HD copy of a channel in place of the 4K one. Viewed at arm length on a laptop panel, the two look much alike, while the traffic they generate does not. Step away and close the player, because an untouched live stream carries on pulling data.
Add separate users and a PIN
A single machine can serve everyone under the roof. The desktop build holds several users, each with a favourites list of its own, added from the user screen. Where children are involved, the Parental Control page in Settings takes a code and removes every category you tick from view.
Send the picture to your television
A cable from laptop to set adds no latency and cannot be knocked over by wireless congestion, which makes it the dependable choice for an evening. Day-to-day watching belongs in the desktop app, where favourites, the schedule and replays live together. VLC earns its place as a diagnostic, telling you in seconds whether a stream is healthy, and as a stand-in when an app misbehaves. Common Windows PC and Mac problems and how to clear them
VLC lists entries but shows no picture
Give a long playlist a moment to settle. Watch the entry counter in the panel and only click once it has stopped climbing. Should a single entry still refuse, open another quality of the same channel instead; one dead row on its own says nothing about the account.
Windows blocks the Smarters installer
Programs that SmartScreen sees rarely get flagged as a matter of routine. Assuming you took the file from the official site, click More info and then Run anyway. What should never be trusted is a player pulled from a pop-up download portal, since builds from there routinely arrive wrapped in adware.
Speech and lips fall out of step
Two keys fix this inside VLC: J and K shift the soundtrack backward and forward until the words match the mouths. The desktop app usually just needs the channel closed and opened again, which resets its timing. Only when neither works is it worth moving to another quality of the same stream.
The web player will not sign in
Browsers hold on to old passwords long after they stop working. Clear the saved entry and type both values by hand. Where the tier allows a single device, check nothing else is mid-programme, because the request arriving second is the one that gets turned away.
macOS refuses to open the app
Unverified software is stopped by Gatekeeper before it starts. Providing the installer came from the official site, go to System Settings, Privacy & Security, look for the line about the app that was blocked and press Open Anyway. Starting it again from Applications then works as normal.
The fan roars and 4K stutters
Older processors decoding 4K in software heat up, and heat brings throttling, which is what you see as stutter. Switch decoding to hardware, plug the charger in and shut spare browser tabs. Judder that survives all that calls for FHD or HD, near enough identical on a laptop panel and much lighter on the line.
VLC shows no subtitles
Look under Subtitle, Sub Track and confirm something other than Disable is selected. Where the menu is genuinely empty, the stream is arriving without any subtitle data, and no setting will conjure some up. An update through the Help menu adds newer subtitle and audio formats and often brings missing tracks back.
Programme times are wrong in Smarters
Whatever the machine thinks the hour is, the schedule inherits. Set the zone automatically in Windows or macOS, then refresh the listings inside the app. If one source alone remains adrift, EPG Timeshift in the settings moves it forward or back in full hours until it agrees with reality.
Casting to the television keeps freezing
A cast compresses the video and throws it across the room, so a crowded wireless network tears it apart. Bring the laptop nearer the set, close whatever else is working hard and drop to an HD stream. For a whole evening, though, nothing wireless matches a plain cable for steadiness.
